Easy Sewing Projects for the Bank Holiday

Easy Sewing Projects for the Bank Holiday

We have nearly made it to the August Bank Holiday, so it's time to have a cup of tea and relax. But it’s also a great opportunity to make the things you have on your sewing list;  however, if you have been super organised and got through the list already, here are a few easy sewing projects that you can make over a Bank Holiday weekend. Not only that, we have included a few things to make with children to help keep them entertained if you are running low on ideas at the end of the summer holidays.

Easy Dressmaking Sewing Projects

The Ogden Cami Pattern

The Ogden Cami is a real show stopper and fan favourite, and even better it only takes half a day to make. Once you have made one Ogden Cami, you will be making hundreds. It can be made from any fabric with a bit of drape - we recommend crepe, viscose or even a light weight linen fabric. So this would be a great pattern for a quick last minute summer make. We even have a great selection of new digitally printed viscose fabrics which are perfect for this simple pattern.

The Hey June Handmade Greer Jumpsuit Pattern

Now this jumpsuit pattern may take slightly longer to make (a WHOLE day) but you have the entire bank holiday to work on it and we don’t think you will regret it. And the options of which fabric to make it in are endless: chambray, linen or even a crepe fabric are all perfect for this. It would be ideal to make now for the last hot days of summer, and then could be layered up as we go into the autumn with cardigans and long sleeved tops. Did we mention our large collection of linens in stock at the moment? Pick a colour, any colour and we are pretty sure we would have a linen fabric in your perfect shade.

Fibre Mood Jemma Skirt Pattern

If you're looking for a super simple skirt with the all in important pockets, then this could be the skirt for you to make in just half a day. It uses lots of fabric to create a full skirt that can be ankle length or whatever length you choose. It can be made from such a wide variety of fabrics, and is a great pattern for any season. If you are thinking of making it for the last of the summer heatwave, choose a broderie anglaise fabric. However, if you are using your bank holiday to make garments for the Autumn and Winter seasons, take a look at our corduroy fabric collection.

Free Patterns to make with the Kids

The Bank Holiday is also a time for entertaining the small people, so what about introducing them to sewing with these simple makes. If you are looking for more free patterns, we have quite a few on our Pinterest page of Free Patterns.

Scrunchies

Once you have made one scrunchie, you will be looking for any suitable scraps to make more. They are a great way to use any fabric scraps of fun prints and also make great presents which are perfect for stocking fillers (Christmas is coming). With these step by step instructions, all your scraps will simply disappear. And did we mention, we stock the perfect elastic for these too…

 Drawstring Bags

You never know how much you need a drawstring bag until you have made one. Great for when you go away, great for storing shoes, great for throwing into a back pack just in case. Not only that, but they are perfect for making with kids because you can make them from all their favourite fun character prints or take the opportunity to use lots of those fabric scraps. They are simple to make and quick too, ideal for a short attention span.

 Bucket Hats

It feels like everyone has got a bucket hat pattern so really you need to make one. You can’t go wrong with a bucket hat because they are small and can be slung in your bag and it won’t be crushed by everything else you have in there. This pattern recommends using fabrics with a bit of strength like a cotton twill or a  denim.  You could also use some of our furnishing brushed cotton panama fabrics in bright colours. If you were thinking more of a pattern, what about these fun twill stripes? A mixture could be super fun.
