It’s our favourite time of year at Fabrics Galore as we head into the cooler months, and we turn to the Autumn fabrics which keep us cosy. But we still want to look good and while we may not be taking on all the fashion trends, we are thrilled to see many Autumn trends that we can get right on board with and dare we say it, even get excited about. Read on for sewing the autumn trends in 2023….
Autumn 2023 Trend No 1: Butter Yellow, Bright Red and Head to Toe Black
Yes, a real mixture but hear us out: traffic stopping red was a feature of every catwalk for Autumn for going out, but balanced by a new luxe neutral in the form of butter yellow and a sobering return to head-to-toe black for both business and evening wear.
We think the Zadie Jumpsuit would look great in both butter yellow and black and given the popularity of this pattern, why not make it in both? The pattern calls for Cottons, Drape, Denim, Corduroy or Linen and we think our yellow chambray cotton is just the right shade. Or a shade lighter in our lovely soft cream double gauze?
Autumn 2023 Trend No 2: Gothic florals
Now don’t worry, this trend is not serious goth but really embraces dark and moody florals which look so good in Autumn. Look no further than our best-selling black viscose Falling Ginkgo:

Or if black is a little too moody, how about another bestselling viscose:
Printed Spun Viscose Petra in Blackcurrant
Autumn 2023 Trend No 3: Business style suits with large shoulder pads
Oh yes, shoulder pads are back and a smart jacket is so versatile to throw over our Autumn jackets or to smarten up your denim outfit; so we are thinking of structure rather than full on Dynasty style shoulder pads and the VikiSews Fernanda Blazer is perfect for a versatile jacket to smarten up any outfit. The pattern calls for wool, viscose or wool blends but no stretch fabrics:
It would look great in a versatile charcoal herringbone or if you are going for the office vibe then a pinstripe is always smart:

Autumn 2023 Trend No 4: a smart white shirt
Continuing the tailored theme, a smart white shirt is a capsule wardrobe essential and looks great under the blazer above or again to smarten up your denim jeans: The Belinda Button Up shirt looks amazing in white, comes with two collar and cuff options and has great details on the sleeves and collar. For all the collar lovers, look no further than the gorgeous Friday Pattern Company Patina Blouse.

Autumn 2023 Trend No 5: Scarf Dressing
Now this is a fabulous cosy trend for Autumn and winter. Oversize scarves which can double up as blankets. Now if you’re ambitious you could make this fabulous scarf coat or jacket from Simplicity. But we are also loving this Vogue wrap shrug and scarf pattern. You could go super cosy with bouclé or for a more classic dressmaking wool.

Autumn 2023 Trend No 6: Hourglass Silhouette
We love this trend because while a traditional hourglass silhouette may imply a lack of comfort, if we interpret this trend as a wrap dress in a gorgeous stretch knit, then we can be comfortable and glamorous all at the same time – which is a definite win-win for autumn. The Elodie wrap dress is a perfect wrap dress for a classic hourglass silhouette or for a more fitted option, try the Tilly and the Buttons Etta Dress.
For maximum impact and to embrace the new season’s red trend, (which by the way is surprisingly flattering on all skin tones) why not make the Etta in our bright red triple crepe or the Elodie in our best-selling emerald viscose:

Autumn 2023 Trend No 7: Vibrant Tartans and Checks
This trend is a definite nod to Vivienne Westwood who sadly passed away last December but her legacy lives on with vibrant tartan and check featuring heavily on the A/W 23 runways. The Pietra Pants and Shorts pattern would look amazing in any of our viscose blend tartans. And you can nod to the bright red trend with this fabulous tartan:

Autumn 2023 Trend No 8: bows, ballerina details and clutch bags
So, if we are looking at really easy trends, bows featured heavily and what better way to embrace this than with the beautiful Miette skirt pattern from TATB. Tilly recommends a medium weight denim, linen or cotton for this easy gently flared wraparound skirt.
And the clutch bag is back and this could be our new favourite:
