Top Reasons to be Excited about the 2022 Great British Sewing Bee

When is the Great British Sewing Bee 2022 kicking off?

It is finally that time of year again where we are all super duper excited to tune into some great sewing based telly. Yes you guessed it, the Great British Sewing Bee is making a grand return. It is starting on Wednesday 27th April, at 8pm on BBC1 and will be the first of 10 weekly episodes. This year 12 contestants will battle it out at the sewing machine testing their creativity, sewing skills and ability to work under pressure and hopefully they will be whipping up plenty of inspiration for the rest of us in the process. There are just so many reasons to be excited....

Who are the GBSB Season 8 Judges?

The only slightly upsetting news is that everyone’s favourite darling, Joe Lycett has left the show but has been replaced with all round favourite Sara Pascoe. She has already had some practice as she did the Christmas and New Year 2021 GBSB specials alongside seasoned judges and sewing Pin Up Patrick Grant together with the gift that keeps on giving, Esme Young.

We at Fabrics Galore are really excited about Sara Pascoe as she is a huge fan of Frida Kahlo and has been spotted a few times in not just Frida prints but some of our Alexander Henry Frida Prints. She must have got the Sewing Bug too after taking part in the Christmas Special in 2020….

GBSB: What we know so far…..

Now we don’t know much, but what we do know so far is that the first episode is based around creating a capsule wardrobe (FG has already covered this in our blog: The perfect capsule wardrobe for UK staycations  and we have a Pinterest board dedicated to this topic).

However, the contestants are first being asked to make a wool mini skirt with piped patch pockets in the pattern challenge and then in the transformation section they are turning loungewear into an adult's top. Now this is something we can get onboard with because if you are anything like us, you have plenty of sweatshirts that need something jazzy added to them. Not only that, but we have a great loungewear collection for all your comfort needs.

And then finally, in the Made to Measure, the task is to perfectly fit a wrap dress to a model, which we imagine will be based around something pretty and drapey and if that has already got your thinking cap on, why not check out our Drape collection.

If you want to keep up to date with all the fabrics linked to each episode, keep an eye on our newsletter where each week we will be selecting the ideal pattern for at least one task and showing you the suitable fabrics too.

GBSB Highlights from last year?

There are so many highlights from last year to even remember so we had to remind ourselves with this handy reel from our Instagram page.

But a definite favourite was the week that last year's contestants had to make something from a pair of curtains highlighting what we we have been saying for years: curtain fabric can make pretty good clothes too. Just look at this little skirt made from our Orla Kiely fabric….

Or again, the week they dedicated to our fav Frida - so many highlights and plenty more to come this year.

Worried you might miss out on a look? Well, not only will we be sending you our usual weekly newsletter with highlights from the Sewing Bee with handy pattern and fabrics hints if the show has inspired you. We will also have a Sewing Bee Collection which we will change every week to include all the suitable fabrics for that weeks tasks. So you really will never miss a thing….
