Summer holidays still feel like a long way away, and who knows yet whether we can travel to warmer climes? But that doesn’t mean we can’t dress as if we’re on holiday! Everyone is desperate to put on a spring floral dress and banish the comfy, cosy WFH wear which saw us through winter! Let’s dream of summer and update our holiday wardrobe in our dressmaking plans. You will, of course, be looking to replicate the sun, sea and sand in your outfits, hopefully bringing a little sunshine to your day-to-day life. To help you do just that, the team at Fabrics Galore have put together some of our personal favourite dressmaking fabrics that will reflect some of the best summer trends for this year.
Printed cotton fabric
Cotton fabric is such a versatile material, especially during the warmer months - and it’s no surprise why you find this fabric used so widely in summer garments. If you are looking to update your summer wardrobe, printed cotton is a must-have. Not only is it relatively inexpensive, but this soft, lightweight and breathable material comes in so many different styles and prints, so the world is your oyster when it comes to designing your summer wardrobe.

Across the Fabrics Galore website, we have a wide range of cottons available for you to choose from including printed cottons and even jungle print cottons. Summer is the perfect time to experiment with different styles and prints, and it’s almost guaranteed that wearing jungle print cottons will make you feel like you’re about to embark on a sunny summer holiday. Some of the options we have on our website would make a wonderful dressmaking fabric for a top, skirt or striking dress - it’s completely up to you.
If you are looking for inspiration for your dream home-holiday clothing, batik cotton deserves to stand on its own two feet as it is created through a unique dyeing process, that is unlike any other fabric. As it’s such a distinctive material, batiks have the ability to really enhance any dressmaking project - especially for the warmer months. Summer holidays are all about enjoying bright colours and having fun with your wardrobe, and batik cottons have a certain depth of colour that isn’t found in other fabrics, so you can really explore some bright and colourful dressmaking projects.

Linen fabric is a fabric which comes into its own in summer, as it not only looks wonderful, but it allows air to circulate freely and wicks away moisture that builds up in the warmer environment. If you want to feel like you’re on holiday by wearing relaxed outfits, linen can be used to create stylish, quintessentially summery looks - such as relaxed-fitting trousers and lightweight jackets, as well as blouses, skirts and dresses. One of the other amazing things about linen is that there are so many different variations of the material to use, so you truly can create any summer garment you wish.

Once again from the cotton family, jersey fabric is such a versatile fabric that can even be used in the warmer months - perfect for any chillier days or evenings, which we do tend to experience at least once in a while on our summer holidays! Despite being a knit fabric, which you may associate with winter, jersey can be lightweight with a lovely drape and is ideal for designing summer garments such as dresses and skirts, as well as t-shirts, so it is still a great choice of material to inspire your summer holiday wardrobe. Why not introduce a touch of brightly coloured leopard print fabric in cotton jersey to check the animal print and yellow trend?
