Halloween has often been seen as an American celebration but each year the popularity of the day grows in the UK. Seen no longer as a day of trick or treating, adults are joining in on the ghoulish celebrations as well. So where did this celebration come from?

It originated with the ancient Celtic Pagans of the British Isles and their celebration of Samhain – the feast of the New Year, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III elected 1st November as a time to honour all saints; which quickly came to be known as “All Saints Day”. In doing so he incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain.

The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick or treating, carving pumpkin lanterns, dressing up in costumes and general festivities.

Halloween Fabrics Galore

At Fabrics Galore, the week leading up to Halloween is always a buzz with people coming in and dreaming up all manner of ideas to make their Halloween costumes, whether you want to be a corpse bride or think outside the box and be a tornado.

This year’s celebration is particularly apt as it coincides with the last few weeks of the Frida Kahlo exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Frida, is often cited as a huge source of inspiration for Halloween costumes and her Mexican heritage brings in the Day of the Dead as well.

So, if dressing up isn't quite your thing, we have the ideal alternative. Alexander Henry is a California based fabric manufacturer, who designs diverse fabrics and features both Halloween and Frida Kahlo inspired prints. Below is a selection of our personal favourites, which will make you stand out not only on Halloween.

First up is a design based on the Mexican festival of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died and help support their spiritual journey. The fabric depicts skeletons playing different musical instruments and having a wonderful time.  For more in this spooky thread, take a closer look at the Fiesta De Los Muertos in Black now!

Next up we have this stunning Frida Kahlo print called Gotas De Amor, which means “medicine of love”. This print depicts Frida with different iconic looks. Skeletons also accompany her; and they are beautifully decorated with flowers. This comes in three different colours, so there really is something for everyone.
