We seem to find ourselves constantly in the comfort of our own home, either working from home at a desk, chilling out on the sofa - or potentially homeschooling young children! Most people may be considering purchasing comfortable loungewear to relax in, but this can be surprisingly expensive. Therefore, if you love dressmaking and designing your own garments, why not consider creating your very own WFH loungewear sets? It will not only give you a project to work on, but the end result will be some gorgeous, comfy clothes that you will treasure for not only the rest of lockdown, but any lazy days you may have in the future.
What fabrics should you use?
Loungewear pieces are all about being comfortable, but smart enough for the working from home video calls, so you need to ensure that the materials you choose are very soft to the touch and are not going to irritate your skin while retaining some structure to look smart. For example, not many people want to relax in a pair of jeans, as you can become quite uncomfortable after a while - so you need a fabric which will keep you comfy and is practical at the same time. It is also important to take into consideration the style, fit, silhouette and structure you want to achieve with your design so that you don’t look too comfortable for those WFH video calls! To help you, here are just a few suggestions:
If you are looking for a soft and breathable fabric for your loungewear project, you can’t go wrong with brushed cotton. At Fabrics Galore, our wide variety of brushed cotton fabrics are extremely comfortable on the skin without any itchiness, but they are still very breathable - which will help you to remain comfortable while wearing them. Brushed cotton is also very easy to sew with and is the ideal material for anyone just starting out with dressmaking.
We couldn’t discuss a loungewear project without mentioning jersey fabric. This knitted fabric is a lightweight and flexible material that would be ideal to use for a comfy top and pair of trousers. The stretch, softness, and absorbency of this material make it a great fabric for loungewear – and its versatility means there really are endless possibilities on how you can use it in your dressmaking projects.
Ponte Roma fabric is a lovely structured jersey due to its unique knit and will certainly keep you warm at home while also looking pretty stylish when made up as a dress or jacket style cardigan. The Ponte de Roma fabric we stock is a superior quality dressmaking jersey fabric which is less likely to pill and with a good structure is a lovely soft jersey. They are also available in a range of beautiful plain colours in our online fabric store.
You don’t want to be hot and stuffy when sat at home, which is why linen fabric is another great choice of material for your loungewear project. It has a naturally cool touch which is very soft, which makes it a great choice for relaxing and keeping you comfortable while we can’t go anywhere! It allows air to circulate freely and wick away any moisture that builds up, and combined with the smoothness of the fabric, it really is a great material for a loungewear set. Linen fabric is even known to have a light massaging effect!
How to design loungewear garments
As with any other dressmaking project, there are so many free patterns available that you can choose from to design your own loungewear set. Most sets include just a basic t-shirt or crop top, with a pair of matching comfortable jogging bottoms. When using one of the easy materials we have mentioned, we are almost certain that the project will be relatively inexpensive and simple, leaving you with a new comfy outfit to enjoy for lazy days to come! You will have the ability to not only stay comfy and cosy, but also looking very stylish the entire time.
