Floral patterns are timeless designs. Often having less of a definitive structure, florals are usually inspired by nature and will help to complement your outfit, without overpowering it. If you are looking to create some new dressmaking pieces, you will be pleased to know that floral print is a huge trend this summer. They are all about having fun with fashion and embracing the warmer weather. So, how should you use floral cotton fabric in your next dressmaking project?

Summer Dresses

Dresses are a summer staple, and never ever go out of fashion. Why not create a gorgeous summer dress with floral cotton fabric? It could turn out to be the perfect summer frock that will keep you cool. The perfect sundress is the one you have sewn yourself from just the right fabric. As cotton is such an easy fabric to work with, this would make the perfect beginner’s project. There are so many different patterns out there for dresses, from shift dresses to more flowing designs, but whichever pattern you choose, you will always end up with a light and breezy finish when working with floral cotton.

Elastic Waist Skirts

elastic dressesSkirts with elastic waists are not only ridiculously comfortable to wear, but they are also so simple to make yourself. You can choose from a variety of different fabrics for these designs, but we highly recommend using floral cotton, as the floral-print skirt is a must-have in any wardrobe, which can easily be dressed up or down, depending on the look you want to achieve. The right measurements will give you a great fit for a skirt you will actually be comfortable and confident wearing.

Summer Top

floral cotton fabricFloral cotton fabric is the perfect choice for a quick and simple summer top. The breathable and versatile material is super soft and comfortable to wear, so why not create a wonderful summer staple for your wardrobe? Although cotton doesn’t always work best with the most flowing designs, you can create a garment which is more structured - such as a tunic or blouse. Pillowcase-type tops allow the cotton to hang more naturally, giving you a slightly drapey effect.

Loungewear

When working on your dressmaking projects you don’t always need to think about dressing up, you can dress down too. Pyjamas and sleepwear patterns are perfect for a fun floral print, and as they are often cut with straight lines and full legs, this means they are also relatively easy to sew. Cotton has always been a natural choice for nightwear, as its breathable nature allows air to circulate around the skin and help to provide a better night’s sleep.

Facemasks

Especially in the world’s current climate, there are so many different face mask pattern options, and floral cotton is the perfect choice for these designs. Floral cotton will not only give you the cheery pop of colour you desire, it is also the recommended fabric to use, due to its high quality. Jersey materials should be completely avoided, as they create holes when they stretch and could allow small particles to get through, but something like cotton poplin is much stronger and a better choice for this design purpose.
