Why We’re All Giddy For Gingham

Why We’re All Giddy For Gingham

Fabrics Galore Giddy for Gingham

Over the past few months there has been a murmuring of a new trend in both dressmaking and soft furnishing – GINGHAM. This is a classic style of fabric with a rich history in the textiles world, so whether it is because we are day-dreaming of the possibility of more freedom in the summer months and we want that hit of summer vibes, or we just wanted something to brighten up the darker days, we are here for it. It’s always been very versatile, and available in just about every colour of the rainbow, so it’s no wonder why gingham fabric is so trendy again.

How to incorporate gingham fabric in your dressmaking wardrobe?

Gingham is often considered a very fresh summery alternative to floral fabrics and allows you to embrace a more preppy style which is perfect for the warmer weather, or even try out something so retro it’s actually edgy. Gingham in dressmaking for spring and summer is a guaranteed trend this year, but the main focus does seem to be on dresses. Whether this is a super cute picnic-ready mini dress, or something chicer for your summer holiday - like a midi dress - you can’t go wrong with a gingham design. Here at FG we know one thing for certain, you can’t go wrong with navy.

Gingham Dressmaking Fabric Navy and White

At Fabrics Galore, we have this gorgeous navy and white gingham fabric available, which is a material we have truly fallen in love with to create a natural, relaxed style. To elevate your gingham look even further nothing says ‘summer dress’ more than a lovely seersucker.

When it comes to working with gingham for your dressmaking fabric, because the yarn is dyed before it’s woven it means that the material is the same on each side, making it very easy to fold and sew.

Using gingham fabric in your home

Gingham in interiors and soft furnishing is somewhat different to dressmaking. It's a home furnishing trend that has crept up on us, but suddenly we want it everywhere, and this exceptionally versatile print is perfect for creating the stylish yet comforting country house look which is top of our wish-list in interiors. Gingham can be woven into any room in the house, but especially in the kitchen, is there anything cuter than a gingham table cloth or gingham napkins? We don’t think so. This lovely addition to the room can be topped off with some decorative candles, and you may just feel like you are dining in your favourite Italian restaurant every night for dinner.

Home Furnishing Red Gingham

This Italian vibe red corded gingham is also available in pink, yellow and light blue.

Here at Fabrics Galore, the news we have all been very excited about is our latest delivery of soft furnishing gingham. This would be perfect as a headboard for a lovely mix of nostalgia and femininity in your bedroom, especially in either the pretty turquoise or bright pink.

However, if 80s nostalgia isn’t quite your vibe, and you can’t get quite as giddy for gingham as everyone else, a ticking stripe could well be the perfect nod to the trend. Using a stripe gives the same slight colour and texture of the gingham but in a slightly more minimal way; but it still has a summery countryside feel which can be beautifully incorporated within your home. Ticking actually comes from the Greek word ‘Theka’, which means case or covering, which is why it is traditionally associated with mattresses.
