What Are The Different Uses of Faux Suede?

Now we know the feeling, you see a great new fabric and then have no idea what to do with it. With endless possibilities of new projects to try, it can be a nightmare trying to decide where to start! Well, the Fabrics Galore team understands this more than anyone, and we just want to help you out.

If you are trying to decide what to do with faux suede fabric, there may be many possibilities going through your mind. If it’s for furnishing, can you use it for a sofa? But then again, can I make a stylish jacket from it? Well, we hope to answer all of these questions for you, so you can try out all the different uses of faux suede fabric.

How can faux suede be used?

Faux suede can be used for both dressmaking and some furnishing projects as it is durable, tear resistant, has some stain resistant properties and best of all it is washable. However, it can be a tricky material to hand sew and you may need to use a slightly sharper needle on your machine.

For dressmaking, there are a few things to bear in mind. You want to avoid making anything with darts as they can be more pronounced due to the nap (the raised fuzzy surface with a velvet-like texture) and if you need to iron the faux suede, this is best to do so with a tea towel over the top and on a fairly low heat.

What dressmaking projects suit faux suede?

Hot Pink Faux suede Fabric
Let’s be completely honest, here at FG headquarters we have been thinking about making a hot pink suede jacket ever since this bad boy fabric arrived. Especially as our faux suede can be washed at 40 degrees, this makes our faux suede fabric range ideal for a jacket.

Also, have you ever thought about whipping up a pinafore dress in one of our other faux suede fabric colours? Using this material would be a great look for Autumn/Winter and the additional soft texture of the fabric would make it look rather plush and expensive.

Another talking point, as well as another potential plus point for faux suede, is that because it’s made from polyester, this makes it completely vegan. So you can get that lovely leather look without the guilt.

What about faux suede furnishing projects?

Now, onto furnishing, our faux suede has some advantages which makes it ideal for many upholstery and furnishing projects. Being made from 100% polyester and a fluorocarbon coating, faux suede has an excellent resistance to water and staining. Although it’s Martindale is only 40,000, so it’s not quite tough enough for a sofa, this material would be perfect to make some really lovely cushions to add texture to any living room.
But if you are looking to give a room some opulence have you ever thought about using a faux suede to make a headboard? That would really be something. In some ways, it’s similar to the bouclé as it adds texture and cosiness to the room but is also a brilliant fabric for upcycling. If this has got you thinking about some new projects to try with faux suede, why not take a look at our upcycling blog for some inspiration?

Don’t forget about accessories

As we can all go out again with our friends and family, now might be the perfect time to design yourself a brand-new handbag for these special occasions. Well, wouldn’t a faux suede backpack or clutch bag look great? To really play and experiment with textures, why not mix it up with some great brushed cotton panamas as a textural contrast? The possibilities with faux suede are truly endless, so feel free to try out everything you want.
