Corduroy is a vintage textile of cotton or cotton-mix fabric with a raised, ribbed, sheared surface nap and underlying weave. It first became popular back in the 1700s in England and France - being known as “corde du roi”, or "cloth of the king." It is made from 100% cotton or a mixture of cotton and polyester, now heavily being used within the fashion industry and interior design industry. Here at Fabrics Galore, we stock both the needlecord variant, chunky corduroy and the normal corduroy in various colours- so it is completely up to you which type of fabric you choose.

Corduroy fabric is ideal for trousers, skirts and jackets, mostly being used for traditional workwear clothing until the 1970’s when it started to be used for more high fashion clothing. It is one of the more durable types of fabric, so you can make almost anything out of the cloth. The fabric has very strong and durable properties, as it is a blend of woven and cut cotton which results in distinctive ribs, or wales, that run the length of the fabric. These are often referred to as the different “wales” of corduroy, which relates to the size of the cord and the number of ridges per inch.
